Hi Klemme,
The song is "Mountain Dance".
I have the DVD of this performance. Carlos Vega is on the drums and his performance is great.

I've allways known this tune, because my father used to play it on vinyl, but he too forgot the name on it, so i'm pretty puzzled. I know it's on one of the Don/Dave Grusin records, it's just which one it is. I love the tune. And it re-ignited a flame for this tune, seeing it on Audiophile Imports

Thanks alot!
I've ordered the DVD from Audiophile Imports! glad to hear good comments about it
Thanks again. Looks like the whole album is called Mountain Dance.
It was Gadd on the original Mtn Dance
Hey Klemme,
I have that album on vinyl, and yeah, it's called 'Mountain Dance'. Harvey Mason is the drummer throughout, and, well, what can I say, Harvey is the man! There's a fantastic track on it called 'Ragbag'. When I had some lessons years ago with Gavin Harrison, he'd transcribed the whole thing. Check it out here, you can hear harvey going into a really tasty 4 bar groove after the first 16 bars. I used to play along to it The whole album is a masterpiece, I really love it. And the groove on 'City Lights' is out of this world. The clip doesn't play much of it, but it really builds so nice.

Taken out from the GRP site:
This album was a two-fold challenge, one musically, and two sonically. The first consideration is always the music. This album, because it was to be performed live in a studio, which means no overdubbing, created some interesting challenges. The musical concept was to be rhythm section and multiple keyboards. This not only needed special musical arrangements but also very sensitive musicians..... The second part of the challenge was the recording. We decided on recording direct to a two track digital format, which means live mix..no remixing...
This album was completed in the recording studio in five grueling days...these fice days made every person invovled with this project deliver more thatn he thought possible..as they say, "rise to the occasion."
Pretty nice result they came out with!
Pretty nice arrangement on the Ragbag tune, too bad it's only 60 secs i can hear of it. I need to nail this Collection of Dave Grusin record, First the recording-concept is something you don't do anymore, second those harmonies and melodies, they just breathe music! So many records, so little money
Thanks for the info on these old Gems - need to get down to the Second Hand LP and CD shop tomorrow. I'd love to hear these with the smooth and soft Vinyl sound.
Thanks for info again. Harvey did a great job!
Harvey Mason, eh? I thought it was Steve Gadd, too. Especially from the snare sound, the BD-SD-HH triplet fill, and the use of the floor tom as a snare... I reckon I'm just going Gadd crazy - I've bee listening to him a lot lately and I guess I'm hearing him everywhere.
Anyway, I gotta learn half the album, and about a hundred other songs in 2 weeks ... eat site - I was looking around for charts to speed up the learning process and found it
